Alan Roy Scott is an internationally-acclaimed songwriter, songwriting teacher, artist mentor, event producer, and founder of the international multi-cultural music organization Music Bridges. For over 40 years he has worked with the industry’s legends from behind-the-scenes, creating and co-writing with some of the world’s most beloved talent.
Alan's songs have been recorded by Celine Dion, Luther Vandross, Notorious B.I.G., Gloria Estefan, Cyndi Lauper, Patti LaBelle, Neville Bros. Alan was an exclusive staff writer with EMI Music and Jobete Music (Motown) for a combined 11 years before creating his own independent publishing company, Kyushu Boy Music, in 1990.
Alan attended the prestigious Boston Conservatory of Music and majored in Music Composition. He’s won top prizes in the John Lennon Song Contest, The American Song Festival, and numerous awards in International Music Festivals around the world, competing as composer and/or artist, representing the USA in such diverse locales as Kazakhstan, Turkey, Romania, FYR Macedonia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Egypt, Finland, Holland, Ireland, Czech Republic, & Indonesia among others.
In addition to his extensive songwriting career, Alan has been a private songwriting coach for over 15 years, teaching classes and leading seminars domestically through UCLA Extension, The Songwriting School of Los Angeles, Musician's Institute, Songu.com, ASCAP, and the “Grammy-In-The-Schools” program for the Los Angeles Chapter of NARAS. Internationally, he has taught songwriting and music workshops in Australia (through APRA and the Australian Songwriters Conference), Ireland (through IMRO), and Denmark (through KODA), among others.
As the founder of Music Bridges, Alan has created many renowned songwriting collaboration events around the world, most notably “Music Speaks Louder Than Words” (USSR/1998), “Country & Eastern” (Romania/1994), “Pacific Harmony” (Indonesia/1995), “Celtic Harmony” (Ireland/1997), the controversial “Music Bridges...Over Troubled Waters” (Havana, Cuba/1999), and “Music Bridges/Expo 2000 as part of Expo 2000 (Hannover, Germany).
In conjunction with Music Bridges, he also created and organized the Unisong International Song Contest, from 1997-2007 as an annual search for budding songwriting talent. Unisong became one of the leading international song contests alongside such others as the John Lennon Songwriting Contest and ISC.
He was awarded a prestigious Third Century Award by the US Patent & Copyright Board to honour his achievements in the international arena. In 1999, he was commissioned to co-write “The Gift,” the theme song for the 30th-anniversary remembrance in Memphis of the assassination of Martin Luther King, performed by Michael McDonald and The Reverend Al Green.

Naomi’s long association with the ASC as a member of the Sydney Circle has seen many members and guests enjoy her keen insights into their songs submitted for critique in our monthly circle meetings. But time constraints often mean that she can’t go into the depth of critique she’d like to, or that the song merits.
About Naomi’s Song Critiquing Sessions
In Naomi’s Song Critiquing sessions, songwriters can submit a recorded song & lyrics for Naomi to critique, much like in a monthly circle. Naomi will review the song and provide a recorded critique, along with any written notes she’s made. Critiques are expected to be around 15-20 minutes, with detailed unpacking of all the areas Naomi identifies potential for improvement or areas that might be fun to play with alternatives, to see if something even better exists.
I’ve had two critiques from Naomi and she seriously gets the point of my songs better than I do. When I’m writing, I give in to my bad habits and basically have no clear direction or plan, so I like how she explains WHERE the issues are in my current approach, and WHY they will be a problem. Sometimes they are little course corrections, and sometimes they are Wow moments. If you’ve ever heard Naomi give a presentation then you’ll know how passionate she is about songwriting, and her critiques are the same. - Paul

About Naomi’s Intensive Song Working Sessions
In Naomi’s Intensive Song Working sessions, a songwriter can join Naomi live on zoom for an hour, during which she’ll listen to 3-4 songs while reviewing lyrics, and give feedback and critique on each of then, in conversation with the writer. These sessions allow for a deeper play with the song, perhaps allowing Naomi to suggest changes that the writer can play with immediately using an instrument/vocals.
Naomi has long been a valued critique at our monthly circles and has delivered several workshops on song craft which offer a depth of understanding to songwriters that isn’t often able to be unpacked in the short critiquing time available. These mentoring sessions allow Naomi to bring this knowledge into the critiquing process, and spend time suggestion the polishing, fine tuning and crafting that can take an average song to a great one.
